Discussion:
Foetus-like recommendations?

I don't know if people even use this ng for communication anymore, but just
in case...

I'm starting to get into Foetus, only fully listened to Gash so far since
it's the easiest & cheapest to come by. I've read some reviews and heard
sound bytes of older Foetus, and I'd welcome recommendations and/or
overviews on these and other industrial bands from this period & style. Or
even webzines with a wealth of reviews & info.

For years I've been listening to dark ambient/post-industrial (projects like
Lustmord, Biosphere, and those found on the Cold Meat roster). Only recently
am I becoming more interested in more mainstream, beat-oriented industrial,
but I still like it to be non-danceable & somewhat experimental. The only
albums I've found so far that satisfy this particular craving are Skinny
Puppy's Too Dark Park & Last Rights (and now potentially Foetus). I'm not
interested in the more guitar-based heaviness found on Frontline Assembly's
Millennium or many of the Ministry albums. While I enjoy them, they always
feel a bit rigid to me. I can't stand KMFDM or My Life With the Thrill Kill
Kult.

...the point is, I'm able to find very solid resources & communities for
dark ambient, whereas with Foetus my searches haven't yielded much (beyond
the official Foetus website). So if anyone could provide me footing for this
particular world of industrial (maybe webzines & distros), I'd appreciate
it.

Foetus has covered quite a range of styles, therefore it's rather hard to
find somebody who is really similar, on the other hand there are countless
musicians and bands who share a few musical elements with him.

The first obvious recommendation would be early Pig which sounded like a
Foetus clone in the late eighties and early nineties. He went into a more
guitar based rockish direction with his later albums. Then there is Sow,
sort of a side project of Pig with female vocals. But since you said you
dislike KMFDM you should be aware that both Pig and Sow have connections to
them.

Then we have Cop Shoot Cop, basically a rock band with an experimental edge
and a few industrial influences. They have worked with Foetus an many
occasions (Foetus did production for them and some members of CSC returned
the favor by playing with Foetus live, on albums or in side projects).

Another project that sometimes reminds me of Foetus is Snog. They owe him
a lot, but in general they are more a dancey EBM project, so I'm not sure
if this is what you're looking for. Just try and check them out.

Some more starting points for this eighties style industrial would be
Laibach (share their use of orchestral bombast with Foetus) and
Einstürzende Neubauten (more on the experimental side, but I have the
impression that this is what you're looking for).

Well, like I said, Foetus uses a wide range of styles so it's impossible to
pin him down. He attracts recognition from many different sides, not just
one particular scene. Therefore you won't find a resource that specializes
in Foetus-like material. But if you want some more discussion just ask
here.

If you're looking for flat-out clones of Foetus, there's one name you
need to know: SPIT. He plays lots of instruments (mind you, usually
just long enough to sample), he's worked with Thirlwell (metal
percussion on one of Lydia Lunch's albums), and has even copied the
swing variations Jim is fond of. His sense of humour is much smuttier
than Jim's though, so if that bothers you, you may have to deal with it.
His official website is www.vinniespit.com.

Ya know what? I just remembered he was in Nurse With Wound, right?
That certainly fits the experimental vibe.

Also, lately, I've seen J.G. Thirwell credited for TV show theme songs,
particularly cartoons. So he's behind the scenes and probably making
some nice scratch.

I am glad he is getting cash. Could you send some of the names, I
haven't seen any yet. I am guessing that he is not making as much as
Devo yet.

One thing that Foetus put me onto was Steve Reich. I recommend
Tehillim.

I honestly can't remember right now. Cartoon credits scroll by so fast.
I don't even want to guess. So I will keep an eye out for him. I watch
cartoons all the fucking time. My favorite is The Grim Adventures of
Billy and Mandy... but I don't _think_ he did the song for that. Fuck.
I wish I could remember.

My reader didn't pick up the first post, so forgive me for responding to
this one but replying to the original post. I second the Pig recommendation,
but question if you truly can't stand KMFDM. Their style has changed over
the years and their earlier stuff is more Foetus-like - mixing elements of
funk, techno and rock. If you haven't heard them, I'd recommend checking out
the material up to Naïve.

Well, compared to Foetus even the early KMFDM albums are weak. I mean,
I've really tried to like them with all their connections to F.M. Einheit
and Raymond Watts and whatever, but I don't find myself listening to my
KMFDM records often. YMMV, of course.

I can't hear it, but my mate reckons Will is right up the same street at

and a retrospective third compilation. Look them up!

I need to get some Laibach CDs. Mostly because I'm trying to find a
link between Cabaret Voltaire in 1983 and Front 242 and Skinny Puppy
from the late 80s.

Any other mid-80s industrial releases you can recommend would be much
appreciated. I made a list of about 10 I need to buy.

A Split-Second
Autopsia
Factrix
Laibach
NON
Nurse With Wound
Severed Heads
SPK
Coil

One thing I REALLY wish was still available is Klinik.

Earlier F242 is good, particularly No Comment (1984), although Geography
(1982) is a great album once you "know" F242.

One thing I REALLY wish was still available is Klinik.
NON's 'Easy Listening for Iron Youth' is where to start with him. As Locke
says, check out Einstürzende Neubauten and Fad Gadget. Also, as you go back
through the years with Cabaret Voltaire, you'll find Throbbing Gristle makes
some sense :)

Along with NWW, NON, et al, Current 93 and Death in June are particularly
good. There's a lot of cross-pollination with them and Coil. C93's 'All the
Pretty Little Horses/The Inmost Light' is one of my favourites, along with
DiJ's 'Rose Clouds of Holocaust' and 'The World That Summer'. Sol Invictus
(featuring former DiJ's Tony Wakeford) is another name worth mentioning
here. Okay, that's Neo-Folk and Folk Noir dealt with :)

If you're on a Laibach kick, definitely check out Will - they're all over
the place, stylistically, but put together a sound that will court favour
with fans from all over the industrial music scene. Borghesia is another
obvious one here. Will that suffice for shouty neo-Wagnerian grandeur?

If you're into oddities, find out about Rouska Records (sort of centred on
Leeds, UK a number of years ago after the goth scene had kind of combusted),
featuring some great stuff from Cassandra Complex, WMTID and IIRC, The
Screaming Trees. You'll find that kind of stuff to be very much the
continuation of Cabaret Voltaire from their earlier period.

Getting to the edge of noise, with NON, et al, seek out Terminal Cheesecake
and then follow them onto their new incarnation as Bud Alzir, which is over
there in the dub genre. You'll find a way back through the likes of Bill
Laswell, Scorn and other more comfortable material, even Coil. There is, of
course, the Minister of Noise who is more dub inclined, but definitely only
just off the edge of good industrial and Drug Free America did some good
things between being a local Leeds pub band and becoming "techno". You'll
find a lot of that stuff on Dreamtime Records (part of Peaceville Records,
the founder of which hails from my home town). GGFH were on Dreamtime, too.

Some people may point at Killing Joke, too, as part of that era. While, yes,
we listened to Killing Joke as well as all those bands back then, I would
only put them together inconsequentially. Good band, nevertheless. Again,
The Virgin Prunes could be name-dropped at this point, and particularly
Gavin Friday's ongoing work after leaving VP. You'll certainly hear the
influences and hear their influence on a lot of things around that era - a
vastly under-rated band.

Enjoy :)

Oh, and while listening to Einstürzende Neubauten, if you do fall for Blixa
Bargeld's voice (and I think you will), check out Goethes Erben. Bargeld
also had something to do with KMFDM once upon a long time ago and he was one
of that mainstays of (Nick Cave and) The Bad Seeds ... again look out for
Nick Cave on some of C93's stuff.

Why? Cause they also sing in German? Next thing you'll recommend

Goethes Erben is definitely far off from EN and pretty much music
for HSF goth inclined PIB with too much drama in their life. JMO.
