Hey! I only said yes to thinking about learning German, not having
learned German.

BTW, the answer is why not? It'll at least making navigating band
pages easier when there's no English version.

No, not me. Most industrial in my collection is in English anyway, so I
decided it would be a better idea to improve my English.

as I have always "felt" rather than "listened to" my musical drug of
choice, fluent german would be unnecessary.. more a pretentious goal
than true interest in lyrical content, I think. Learn German if
planning a trip to Berlin, or if you've got German pen-pals, not
because you want to lord it over folks that you know what Blixa Bargeld
just sang....

They'd say, "So what? Neubauten put English translations in all their
lyric sheets anyway," and you'd look like an even bigger silly twunt.

ok, I can cop to a bit of pretentious prick-ness... although I WILL say
that the first time I "heard" Clock DVA, Throbbing Gristle, and Skinny
Puppy (at age 15) after only hearing pop music or the music of my
parents, my reaction was more accurately described as a visceral one.
Rather than an aural one. To this day I get chills when I put Too Dark
Park, Haus der Luge, Phenobarbambalam, Gub, etc into my stereo. Quite a
different thing altogether, hm?

*nod* True. It is visceral. Even a 62-year-old psychiatrist who heard
my music said that it, too, was visceral. He felt it in the pit of his
stomach where I feel all my emotions. We should concentrate on that
emotional physicality, most of the time, rather than purely entertaining
the mental.

So, what I'm trying to say is that I agree with you.

That's kinda what I was wondering. Do I really WANT to understand the
lyrics? That's one of the reasons I don't want to learn French to
understand my French Hip Hop. (I just love Francais in that style of
music.)

Often the lyrics are just "listings" of symbolic words, a colorful
description of something wouldn't really fit into industrial music, right?
I guess you could get the meaning by simply translating the lyrics word by
word, but i think *understanding* a highly symbolic german text is very
hard for a non native speaker.

Well, I speak German, but I have no idea what is in your industrial music
collection so how can I tell you if the lyrics are good enough? Industrial
in German is no different from industrial in any other language, sometimes
the lyrics are good, sometimes even important, sometimes they are not.

In the late 90s I worked with a German guy and would have him
translate some stuff. Pretty much all of it he would say was
so horribly poor in grammar/etc that he had trouble making heads
or tails of the lyrics anyways.
