rmi (or Maybe IEEE Music): Lull, Sick, Dying or Dead? (rmi 2002-3 Threads by Month)

Examining rmi's traffic via Google Groups, which only gives you a
thread-, not a post-, count, we see an overall downward trend between
last year and this:

2002

January 1700
February 1690
March 1950
April 1890
May 2200
June 1530
July 1200
August 1290
September 958
October 1370
November 1510
December 1090

2003

January 1100
February 823
March 865
April 615
May 603
June 695
July 621
August 479
September 329

Looks like a drop- off in thread count of from one- half to two-
thirds between last year and this, with the big drop occurring
sometime between November of last year and February of this-- in
particular between January and February.

What happened then? was there a flame- war or troll- infestation or
something?

Or is the problem one of industrial- electro- EBM- electronic (IEEE)
music itself? did Metropolis or Isotank go under? why? what? why?

(Maybe I shoulda done 2001, too.)

Usenet is the problem. Most people have moved to web based forums, and
the newbies aren't told about nntp.

That and the lack of anything much to discuss. The artists used to hang
out here too and they're gone as well.

Yeah, what Todd said. There isn't that much notable going on.
People are kind of shooting blanks within the genre, post- or
otherwise. Traffic in the group in the late 90s and early 2000s
was there because there were interesting releases to follow -
but a lot of the bands who were doing interesting things either
A.) broke up, B.) started doing other sorts of music (IDM,
d'n'b, etc.), or C.) joined the electrobop club circle.

If there's something on the scale of Pendragon or Ant Zen, that
brings a fresh sound, traffic may pick up. But as it is, the
people who hit this newsgroup tend not to be synthpop club
groupies and don't care much about the next In Strict Confidence
CD.

That's fairly true too. I remember the big powernoise rush. There
hasn't been anything in the post industrial genre to equal that impact
since and there's only so many STRAIGHT powernoise albums you can own
before it all starts getting a bit repetetive.

I like the HOMO powernoise, personally.

I stopped posting because my newsreader stopped working and it
started to feel like I was fixing a car just to be on time to dates
with a girl I wasn't so attracted to anymore. I still lurk once in a
while, but not consistently.

Oh, and I'll probably be posting an ebay notice about some limited
edition and OOP Ant-Zen and other postindustrial stuff at some point.
Not my whole collection, just some stuff I no longer (or never did)
care for.

Same stuff I was listening to when I stopped posting, mostly?

Lots of Prefuse 73. Fridge and Four Tet. Manitoba. Filling in
lots of holes in my collection with older stuff from Miles Davis,
Stone Roses, Aphex Twin, Einstuerzende Neubauten, Peter Gabriel,
etcetera etcetera etcetera. Some of my CD budget has been rededicated
to my renewed enthusiasm for comic books. Also, I like to buy things
for my wife. CD purchases are a little more random these days, but
still relatively frequent.

"Powernoise" and "Powerviolence" sound like marketing terms to me.

Whatever happening to recognizing that the noise genre also had "noise
music"?

My pick of bands here: Final, Maeror Tri, K.K. Null, Die Sonne Satans.

What happened then?
I think the genre has finally, after 20 years of regenerating itself,
petered out into nothingness. Powernoise was its last dying gasp and
now that too has been extinguished.

I don't think there is anywhere to go from here. Any creative
developments that build off industrial's past will probably not be
considered "industrial" by the main fanbase of those developments
(witness breackcore, electro-clash, IDM, etc). People will not be
using the name and hence will not search out a forum with the name.

Industrial hasn't been attracting new followers to any significant
degree since the early/mid 90s. Many of us became ardent loyalists
who followed the genre to its bitter end (like me). Such youthful
zealousness can only last so long. Although powernoise created a lot
of excitement, it was mainly the excitement of old time EBM fans
thrilled beyond belief that something new was happening with our worn
out pet genre.

A genre can only stay vital when it hooks new listeners into new
sounds. Industrial served as an important gateway into the world of
creative electronic music for many years for many people, but its
tenure in that role has come to a close.

Most of the core voices of RMI have simply run out of enthusiasm. We
are paying more attention to other genres or extra-musical pursuits.
And the inflow of new fans to carry the torch has slowed to a trickle,
if not a full stop. There is no longer a clear pathway between a
mainstream sound and an innovative industrial subgenre, like there was
in the 80s with synthpop/EBM, and in the 90s with hard rock/industrial
rock. The last interesting offshoot of industrial, powernoise, was
only accessible to people already steeped in the electronic
underground.

My prediction: the thread count on RMI will not pick up. Industrial's
great pantheon will still be revered by individuals of refined taste,
but only as an important aspect of electronic music history, rather
than as an important current genre. New listeners will be enticed by
the limitless creativity of electronic music but they will not think
of "industrial" as playing a central role, because it doesn't anymore.

RIP RMI.

There are a fair amount of people in the UK who are getting into the
likes of EBM and Powernoise, and there are some who see it all as new
and fresh, as it IS for them! But the real reason for decline is the
fact that it's on usenet and most people like html, prettier forums.
There never used to be anything quite like RMI, but people have
started their own forums and they go there instead.

As for new industrial based genres... As you say everyhting influenced
by industrial has got up on it's own feet and started to fend for
itself as a genre in its own right. Some people still think industrial
means Rammstein and Rob Zombie.

We'll see next May. Gen, Peter, Chris and Cosey have said that the RE:TG
performance will be their version of Throbbing Gristle for 2004, not
revisiting the past. Of course, it could all be a bag of shite, but it could
be the ultimate revival with the band that started it all restarting it all
again!
