Discussion:
Whatever Happened to B6?

While searching through a local used CD store I found Birmingham 6's
"Assassinate" CD, and though I have remixes of many of the songs (via
Resurrection) it was still a steal at $6.

While poking around their old web site I noticed that they played at a
club named Metropolis in Europe early this year, but I couldn't find any
other news. Anybody else know differently?

Also, since I like B6's sound *and* lyrics, does anybod have any other
suggestions that I should check out? Or maybe sideprojects?

hmm.. B6 were pretty awesome, and I can't think of much that's quite
similar. You may want to check out Cubanate or Razed in Black if you have
not already.
Hopefully the show that B6 played earlier this year put enough lead in their
pencils to get in the studio and make a new album. I remember reading where
Michael Hillerup (or was it the other guy Kim) said something about his
distaste for the current state of industrial related music.. like VNV and
Apoop.

I've not, but will. I see tons of Cubanate used, which sometimes scares
me, as I'm assuming that people are letting go of medicore albums. But
of course this isn't always the case.
If you had to recommend a Cubanate album or song, which would it be?
Oxyacetylene.. Body Burn was the single off of their first album, though.
Just check out a number of their tracks.. but watch out for stuff from the
"Interference" album.. it's all Drum and Bass type stuff, which I don't dig
at all..

I forgot about that. When I made the "they're all pretty good" comment
there was a voice in the back of my head saying that htey had spun off
in a diff direction on one of them and that I didn't much like it.

Personally I always liked 'antimatter' the best as an album. But
all of them were pretty good.

Personally I love Barbarossa.
Which only solidified my love when I saw them play the title track live...

Mixed feelings here. This new stuff was interesting when I was new to
it all, but frankly nothing gets me off a dance floor and complaining
faster than VNV or Apop. But I still say the new stuff can bring people
on the fringes in. *And* if they are open minded enough, they might
give other things a try.
It gets my goat that VNV always get lumped into the same category as APB due
to the fact there beat-heavy tracks get over played in clubs (I don't go to
many clubs, so I don't get tired of it so much). APB have pretty much sold
out coz Groth wants to be a popstar, the last album have very little worthy
content.

But Ronan continues to write some great tracks, but they get overshadowed by
the club stuff. Take the new EP for instance. Secondskin is really
beautiful, slightly-IDMish, spoken word track, but will all that many people
(who dislike them due over exposure in the scene and in clubs) hear it?
Probably not, because of Honour 2K3, that will be played to death (and,
which, I find rather boring).

I have mixed feelings on this.

I do agree the name dropping probably has a lot to do with just being
overplayed.

I actually like some of Ronan's stuff, but it rarely gets played in a
club. And when it does, it is still at the expense of some other band's
unclub friendly track. (Radio is totally different, which means I love
listening to industrial / goth radio shows, as DJs aren't shackled to
pop music.) Anyway, in a way, I would imagine that a non-standard VNV
track is still likely to be played instead of some of B6's great stuff. :(

But you are right, the chances of me buying the new EP are slim. There
is only so much new and old material that is really good, and there is
enough blah VNV out there that I've decided to just try other things.

This isn't really a reflection just on VNV, but it also says that there
is other interesting stuff out there.

I can't be the only person here who loves reading setlists from clubs
I'll never visit. I also search google to see if bands I don't hear
that often are getting played elsewhere.

DISCLAIMER: I hope I don't come off as ungreatful or complaining about
club music, because there are a few DJs who are great about spoiling me
and playing good music that will clear a dance floor. I'm just GREEDY
and want more of that. ;)

Oh man, I only wish I could one day see Cubanate live. I'd love to hear
"Vortech 1".. "Angeldust" would be nice, too.

Yeah, what's the deal with the new version of Honour? It sounds like the
original, just slightly remixed.. quite boring :-/

Well, the one time I saw them, the singer (who I can't remember the name
of right now) was squeezed in a leather outfit that was about 2 sizes
too small and completely blasted out of his gourd.

For instance, when they did Body Burn, he just sorta sat on the floor
and mumbled things like "body <way longer pause then should be> burn ...
<another long pause> hate you <fall down a bit>" etc

Well, it's mostly their own fault, Ronan and Stefan came up with the futurepop
term together and included themselves in it.

Girl.
