how come punkers always got the blame for crime and urban blight in
the movies?

think of star trek IV where some punker is playing a loud boombox in a
bus. a guy with a loud boombox in urban setting in america would most
likely be black.

think of death wish III where the gang leader is a punker. a punk
gang leader of blacks and hispanics? what!?

in fourth protocal, michael caine beats up a punker.

most punkers are decent folk. this is slander, i tell you.

Those films are all from the 1980s.

Punks, or teenagers who had a "punk" look were typicaly used as generic
juvenile delinquents in the 80s. I don't think you see if quite as much
today. Most of that anxiety has probably been shifted considerably to
worrying about gangs and whatnot.
In urban-blight/the-country's-goin'-to-hell-in-a-handbasket type of
movies (like DEATH WISH and CLASS OF 1984), the whole mohawk/colored
hair/spiky accessories/'punk look' was always used to suggest that those
kids were obviously part of the downfall of western civilization. People have
always been intimidated by youth subculture and teenagers in general, and
perpetuating negative stereotypes of them in movies has been one way to
stigmatize on a large scale.

They're not necessarily good *actors*, though, Meat. I'm
thinking in particular of the embarrasingly bad performances
by Johnny Rotten/Lydon, in "Order of Death"/Corrupt/ Cop
Killer" - whatever the fuck it's called, Joe Strummer in the
otherwise-excellent "Mystery Train" and Nick Cave (who started
out as a "Punker", as you put it) in the brill Aussie film "Ghosts
of the Civil Dead". Those were all fine flicks, but the Punkers
didn't carry their weight.

Agreed. Return of the Living Dead (or one of them in that series) has a
great quote from a punker who is tired of the type casting - "You think
this is a costume? This is a way of life!"

(the usual race-baiting crap cut)

These production types like bad guys with cool costumes - not quite
sure why the goths didn't take up the mantle - maybe I don't get out
to enough movies. See:

Because Goths are usually skinny pasty looking guys/gals. Hardly
threatening looking.

A lot like that skit from SNL. Most are sniveling high school kids...

You've got the entire post-Hammer vampire genre for a start - from the Lost
Boys, through Interview with the Vampire and the Crow (pseudo-vampires) to
Buffy and Angel.
