Wondering about some artists

Hello,

I was following some information about a recent discovery of mine -
[The User] and their Symphony #1, and I found them featured by
Asphodel.
http://www.asphodel.com/doc/featured_artists.html
That artists list is quite big, showing known names as Xenakis, John
Cage, Rhythm&Noise, Diamanda Galas and DJ Spooky. All the other are
totally unknown to me.

Does anybody have a suggestion what to try out from the others? Hints:
I _loved_ those dot matrix printers, I listen occasionally to Xenakis
and Galas, R&N didn't impress me much, and I am NOT interested in DJ
Spooky, neither in ambient/dub/trip/d&b/goa/trance/younameit... is
there anything I might like?

Thanks a lot,
S

so then what do you *really* like if you only occasionally listen to
xenakis, don't like rhythm n noise and dont want any ambient dub or
trip hop?

I'd say your best bets on that list of artists are otomo yoshide and
Thomas Dimuzio.

There are a lot of *really* good musicians on that list. Rob Swift is
also really cool, but it's more along the lines of instrumental hip
hop. same with the x-ecutioners.

this label looks really cool, as a matter of fact.

Many. But given this context, I'd like to hear more of that
experimental stuff. The dot matrix printers appealed to me as I was
working with them long years ago, so I really felt the music of my
environment talking directly to me. On the other hand, I don't have
any background or relationships with hiphop or breakcore-like and I'd
like to keep it that way. I also miss the message and feeling of most
ambient and technoid acts (in my _own_ opinion, no offense intended),
so I said I'd avoid them. Other different things I'd want to hear,
again in this context, would be Winterkälte -like or Dissecting Table
- like stuff, some harsh noise when rhythmic the better (less breaks
though)

Glad you liked the list :)
I will surely look into them, thank you.

If you like the environmental ticking of dot matrix printers, I'd
suggest stuff like Silk Saw - 4th Dividers and Vromb's Episodes album.
Cyclic rhythmic clicking over textures. Both great to chill to.

I must admit to moving slightly away from rhythmic noise stuff today.
Even though you say no breakcore I'd say get the Xanopticon album it's
not like normal breakcore, it's alot less d&b and more rhythmic
noisey. I really enjoy it!

I was thoroughly unimpressed with the vromb album...way too repetitive
and drony for my tastes. the artwork was pretty cool though.

although I like some xanopticon stuff i heard, but i would not
reccoment it for soterro, as most of what i have heard come from this
guy is very disjuncted, bordering on arhythmic beats. kind of like the
type of beats that are so fast they just sound off, ya know? it's
kinda, post-breakcore, quasi noise influenced. the main gripe i have
about all this hyped breakcore stuff is that a lot of it sounds rather
cheesy, with the the overly dramatic "evil" synths and the same
distorted breaks over and over.

well, there *is* a new dissecting table album that just got released
(cough http://www.mile329.org cough) a few days ago...

and i think Man or Astroman did a few songs with a dot matrix printer...

ambient and technoid acts...with a message? although i do think
politically charged ambient music would be a fucking awesome idea, i
haven't come across any. please tell me if you do find one. some
recently interesting "technoid" acts i've heard were joseph nothing
(his brother records under Com.a, and is a bit more dancy), and a guy
named Felix Kubin. I'm looking through my mp3 playlists to try and
suggest something, but it's difficult because it's been a long time
that i've listened to stuff like winterkalte, and most of my recent
plays have been hip hop :)

maybe another artist you want to look into is Jan Jelinek, it's kinda
click-housy. He just did an awesome album with an australian free jazz
group called Triosk, and the album is appropriately labeled "triosk
meets jan jelinek - 1+3+1"

i think your best bet for harsh rhythmic noise would be to check out
the bands on ant-zen and like minded labels you haven't heard of
already. some of the better ones i've stumbled across were exclipsect
and...actually, that was the only one i've heard since winterkalte
that's really struck me as "rockin"...

cheers,

Track three made my brain melt. So awesome.

Paul Slocum (the guy responsible for the Atari 2600 synth cartridge)
made a dot matrix synth. Go check out his stuff at http://qotile.net/
... one of the dot matrix mp3s is REALLY good.

Felix Kubin is awesome, "Der falsche Spieler" contains one of the best
uses of Casio SK-1 I've ever encountered in that kind of music.

Felix Kubin = Felix Knoth, no?
If so, he made a cool record with a zootrope on top.
