I have played keyboards years ago. When I stopped the Yamaha DX-7 was
the ticket.

Now I am ready to start back playing and have been watching the Roland
units. What would you suggest to buy for a 50 year old smooth jazz ,old
rock, some beach music, contemporary Christian, self taught player?

try alt.music.synth or alt.music.makers.

Roland's are a good bet though, consider combining an Roland XV* unit
with a weighted controller keyboard.
