don't sign to the following labels:

Metropolis
Cleopatra
Invisible
... (any others?)

Try to imitate another artist to get the hang of it, but don't promote
that as your project. Take a course or try to teach yourself music
theory. Read "The Manual" by Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty (it's an
interesting look at how the business of pop music worked in the late
80s.

Buy volumes of "Now that's what I call Music" dating back to at least
the mid 80s, listen to them extensively (sp).

Don't start an internet street team.
Don't spam groups with your project and certainly don't make any broad
assumptions about how great your project is.

Find locations to play locally, such as open mic nights and such, but be
sure the venue is friendly to your type of music (heh :P ).

You didn't mention anything about preferred instruments or anything, but
invest in a 4 track recorder and go from there.

First of all... Don't.

Secondly, if you must, at least define 'career in the music production
field'. That's an amazingly vague term.

In the third level of the first world, if you jump on top of the last
white box and hold down for about 30 seconds, Mario will appear "behind" the
scenery in the rest of the level. Complete the level as you normally would
and you will recieve the magic whistle which lets you skip to another world.

See parents, this is why you should keep your children tied down with a
rope until they are old enough to understand the consequences of their
actions. But beware, some children never develop this ability, and will
therefore never learn not to do moronic self-mutilating things. :-P

I'll have to go down with the "DON'T" suggestion. Think music
production is fun? Creative? Artistic? You'll be amazed how attractive
a career in a windmill bolt factory might seem after you've recorded
about 2,000 demos and rehearsal sessions for beginning rap groups
"waiting for that big break"...

..."bitch".

Seriously. Go to university, get your parents pay for it, drink too
much, get pregnant and finally fail all your exams. You'll experience
far more life that way - plus you don't have to wear sunglasses even
at 2AM because staring a computer screen in a dark room for years
screwed up your eyes for pretty much for the rest of your living span,
like yours truly. Oh, and I can't hear a squat with my other ear. And
I just fucking recorded only demos.
