Yeah, back in 99, www.diewarzau.com had an image up with some new DW logo,
and it said "12/99" or something like that.. a year or so later, it got
taken down. I think DW is done for. That really sucks :-/

As far as NE goes, i think NE is done for, too.. but who knows..

Indeed it does. DW were my fave, period, with only SP, Coil, and a
couple others even close. They were unique, and that's very rare in
this genre.

True. I figured they were done after ebbhead, and then along came Big
Hit.

That would rule.. we need some of the "old school" industrialists back on
the scene! Man, that'd be a dream come true. At least we have new Cubanate,
new Chemlab, and possibly new B6 to look forward to! Oh, and Kraftwerk's new
album which is supposed to be released later this month.

Blah, I just don't see what's so great about them. I have 1 of their CDs,
and I've heard a few MP3s.. I find them kinda boring :-/

I really like Jared Louche & The Aliens. Especially Suicide Jag, Summer
Wind and Sexy Boy (Reprise).

As for the new Chemlab, its not /just/ Jared. Acumen are pretty heavily
involved, and some others.

I never got into Acumen Nation and related projects much.. I guess I just
don't see what's so great about them :-/
So, I wonder how that will influence the new Chemlab. I'd like to hear an
updated combination of Burnout at the H2 Bar and East Side Militia.. an
equal mix of guitar and electronics.. maybe more on the electronics side.

Yeah, definitely. I'm really looking forward to it, I hope it doesn't suck.

I'm not much into Acumen (they've dropped the Nation again) either, but I've
only got the first two albums (both second hand for a fiver). I thought the
songs were there, but I didn't really like the production, it was various
messy. I'm hoping they've improved with age...

Their production on the DJ? Acucrack stuff has improved, so I'd guess the
Acumen stuff probably has improved too.

I thought it was a very nice disc...

And it will be like "aliens" in that it will be Jared doing vocals to
other peoples music.

Today as I was making a few wish lists, I saw it listed at
http://www.strangefortune.com/ as a preorder.

However, since I'm not old school, but just discovering it, I'll
probably wait for it to come out and here what people have to say first.

New single "Tanz mit Laibach" august 25th, followed by a eurotour and an
album "WAT" September 8th

But I don't have any higher hopes for it.

i know kraftwerk aren't particularly "industrial"... but when i use that
term, I refer to what most people term post-industrial music. it's too much
pointless work to come up with some discombobulated term to describe the
likes of FLA, 242, Chemlab, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb, etc etc.
And by "old school", i'd give that term mainly to the bands that came
pre-1990.. but i'd still give it sparingly to early 90's industrial related
bands.

i resubscribed to RMI for the first time in 2 years, and this is like,

"old shool" industrial is pre-may-1981 (when throbbing gristle broke up)

yes, you do detect a flaw in that eletist line, because its a bunch of
crap. granted, after 81, 'industrial' suddenly became a much broader
term, but it still existed. however, no matter how you slice the genre
up, it all but completely stopped being good at some point around 1992,
when Wax Trax was bought out.

additionally, the only industrial band steve (sound mirror) thinks he
can name is Stabbing Westward, so do not listen to him.

I've read the TG biography "Wreckers of Civilization." Not a brag or
anything, buti t's quite an interesting read on the history of Throbbing
Gristle, Coum Transmissions, Industrial records, and more. As well as a
really cool bio of GP-O.

And GP-O looks EXACTLY like his parents, there's a pic of them in there
and GP-O has the same disturbing stare that they do.

Lots of interestesting and creepy pictures and flyers too.

Fucking spooking coinkidink. I'm discussing TG on alt.punk.uk and just got
that very same book out to check Gen's age (53). And what time is it? After
11pm - 23:00+. Shite, that number's starting to piss me off at this stage. I
explained the 23 Enigma thing to a friend in the pub a couple of weeks ago and
challenged him to pick any other number and compare how many times the two
cropped up. It was the same weekend David Bleedin' Beckham got his new shirt
and 23 was on the cover of nearly every newspaper for 3 days and all over the
TV. What is the universe trying to tell me? Eris can be a real bitch.

Read "Bad Wisdom" by Bill Drummond and Mark Manning. lots of discordian
numerology refrences, but in the end Bill says they were put in there

Actually, I do care about the playlists of clubs (obscure or not), as it
gives me an idea about what people are playing / requesting / listening
to. Ain't that much different than the:

n.p. <band name> :: <album name>

footers people carry around here. And I actually like them too for the
same reason.

there's nothing wrong with np: tags, but i think that's a more
reasonable estimation of what anyone is actually listening to vs. a club
playlist. it's just annoying to me, because that's half of the posts in

A club playlist is a very reasonable estimation of what the audience in
the club was listening to, provided that there actually was an audience
in the club that night.

| it's just annoying to me, because that's half of the posts in
|RMI: playlists.

Well, when you are annoyed by the amount of playlist postings in RMI
there's only one thing you can do about it: post more, and post
something interesting. If your postings are interesting enough to other
people they will respond, and you'll end up with a favorable amount of
non-playlist postings on RMI. Whining, OTOH, won't help.

Just gonna say the same thing myself, the posting rate on this board has
plummetted in recent times and it's coming to resemble the likes of
alt.music.ebm, simply because all that's posted are playlists, ads and
auctions. Post more, the balance changes.

It depends. The reason there is such a thing as "club top-40" music
(g/i has its own top-40) is people request the stuff and want it.

As for half the posts being playlists, well ... gee, maybe if when
somebody tried to talk about music (even if they are wrong), instead of
getting FLAMED, other people just said,

"Actually it is more like this ..."

More people would post more often. I know I keep many of my opinions to
myself instead of starting threads, because there is some truth to the
constant joke about music elitism.

Would it be fair to say that the complaint isn't that playlists are
being posted, but that because of a lack of content, they dominate the
newsgroup?

Exactly..
I have my own 2 definitions of what "industrial" music is.. the first being
the older industrial stuff, like 70's/very early 80s, and the newer
industrial stuff, like 80s to the present. Any purist would disagree.. and
that's ok if they want to, cuz I ain't gonna lose hair over trying to
correct someone. Let's be realistic, no one will ever agree on a single
definition for the term. You can either try and correct every single person
that has a different viewpoint, or you can learn to accept that everyone's
view is different and not worry about it. I choose the latter option.
By the time you die, when you've told everyone what you think the true
definition of industrial is, will you really have accomplished anything?
It's a rhetorical question, by the way...

Heh, I do that myself sometimes, people tend to know what you mean when you
say "early 4AD" (ie. Cochteaus, DCD, This Mortal Coil and Lush), even though
the Pixies and Throwing Muses were 4AD's biggest acts and Lush weren't even on
4AD! I picked it up somewhere along the way, I presume Ivo isn't too bothered
(and probably fairly pleased as he was one of the ethereal pioneers). That
said, I also use ethereal or atmospheric depending. Hey, consistency was never
one of my main traits.

Actually the friend in question was probably thinking:

This Mortal Coil,
DCD, &
Cocteau Twins.

Though I know he owned plenty of Pixies as well. 'cause this was back
in the day before I could afford CDs, so much of what I listened to was
borrowed from him and his roommate (who was into the Puppies).

But before straying too far from the original point, labels can be
incredibly good indicators of a style of music. Sometimes, not always.
In this point, when he said that, I knew exactly what other types of
music I might throw his way (of course it helped when he also showed a
greater interest in the Impressions of Winter and just tried to talk
over the Hocico I was playing before that).

I guess a good question would be:

What labels can be characterized has having a consistent sound?

I'd be curious for _then_ and now.

certainly. for instance, if someone told me that a record that was "mininal
house, like the stuff on kompakt", i'd know exactly what they meant. however,
in the case of "early 4AD", if somebody used that phrase to describe some
music to me, i would have thought it meant something quite different from
what you or girl etc. thought.

>I guess a good question would be:
>

too many to list. most independent lables are founded by people who have a
love for a certain style of music or a strong allegiance to a "scene". hence,
they tend to release records which can fit inside a few closely-related
subgenres. truly eclectic labels are far more rare.

I was tempted to combine this with the last reply ...

Don't worry about being inconsistent about finding a label for that
sound / genre. I was seeing dealers in europe labeling it as:
"Ethereal", "Atmospheric", "Heavenly Voices", "Ambient", "Dark Wave",
etc. The point being, I think everybody is just as inconsistent.

Though I personally liked how the genre names seemed to be in English
and *not* German, and yet, the vast majority of people at
Wave-Gothik-Treffen were German or German speakers.

Changing the subject, is anybody going to the shows (Dive / Monolith /
others & then Converter / Tarmvred the next day) in Toronto the last
week in August? Are the tickets still on sale?

That's the thing, though, most of the ethereal/atmospheric scene is somewhere
between those four bands, bits of world music and classical (DCD), floaty
sounds and vocals (Lush/Cochteaus) mixed some experimental noise and classical
elements (This Mortal Coil).

Nah, that would be your straightforward Goth/post-punk stuff.

Not forgetting, of course, a large dose of All About Eve (definitely not on
4AD).

No there isn't. Music elitism != differing tastes. I am not an
elitist because I prefer SPK over fruity club beats, it just
means I like SPK. I also happen to think progressive trance
with Depeche Mode vocals isn't industrial. That's not elitism,
that's a firm grip on reality.

Many regulars left the newsgroup due to the constant spam and
declining content. Which means its a downward spiral - more
spam equals less content which means the content-makers leave,
so spam becomes more prevalent ...

I don't think I've _ever_ even said anything about SPK or any other band.

But I am of the opinion that _how_ people share their differing tastes
is the difference between elitism and just differences of opinion.

Exactly, I'm sorry, but the problem with this group over the past year or so
was that the now absent regulars constantly flamed anyone who wanted to know
more or discuss bands they considered industrial under the very broad general
understanding. Most of these newbies then left and so did the regulars,
leaving only a few thick-skinned former newbies left. Far too often people
have come in and said things along the lines of "hi, I like industrial bands
like NIN and Apoptygma Berzerk" and want to find more stuff and the reaction
was "fuck off, NIN and Apop aren't industrial", instead of, "we don't consider
NIN or Apop industrial, but you might like to try some real industrial bands
like...". The irony is, of course, that since the more hostile regulars have
left, there has been a far more helpful attitude on this group, but it may be
too late.

wow, i couldn't have said it better myself :-)
yeah, i hate when people give that attitude. i just like to talk about music
and stuff, mainly industrial-related music. i can't think of a more accurate
newsgroup to go to to discuss such topics. i try to be friendly and helpful
on the topic, because that's the kind of attitude i would hope to get in
return if i ever had a question about a band, certain style, certain artist,
etc..

Maybe if more tour information was also posted by bands or people
following the bands, the newsgroup could be a viable resource for
people. At least enough of one that readership would increase. But who
knows how many people are lurking even now!

Or we can wait til Sept. when the next class of freshmen get their first
taste of on-line life ... or does this rule of thumb apply anymore? *grin*

Funny, I was just about to say that "Loki" is to a _goth_ as Michael,
John, or Dave is to a Canadian, eh.

So, how many "Ravenbats" are there outside of Dresden? ;)

Actually I'll comment on that list:
very nice!

If you're looking for a few suggestions from newer acts (assuming of
course that you've not already decided you don't like 'em), try:

stromkern :: armageddon (out on wtii records)

I think many US club DJs should have a stromkern track or two that you
could ask for them to play. Anyway, then from there, one of the
stromkern guys has a non-EBM (I have no idea what genre to call it)
project called Monstrum Sepsis. Find MS's "deep sea creatures". It is
certainly interesting.

I'm sure you've heard suicide commando and velvet acid christ, but
noticed they weren't on your list. But really like one of suicide
commando's older albums "stored images". I found mine used, so many you
can (though not having a car in the US can really suck).

I've not listened to their new album, but Aghast View's "phaseknox" is
worth listening too. I wouldn't call it amazing, but it falls into that
category "EBM not on car's list yet". ;)

I also love the Retrosic's "Messa da Requiem" EP out on tribune records.

And for a few more non-EBM recommendations: request some p.a.l (I like
his "release" album), mlada fronta, or asche. High energy, and loads of
fun.

If you like guitar based music, I just saw Hanzel und Gretyl, and their
new "uber alles" tour was a blast.

For the older stuff, there are plenty of people here who can come up
with much better recommendations. Personally I hope they do, as I'll
make a point of listening to them as well. (And forutnately I have a
car and some cash. I know, totally unfair, but you'll get money and
transportation some day too. I hated college as I was so poor that

thankyou muchly :) yeah, i've listened to some suicide commando, and liked
some, but didn't really like the majority of what i'd heard, so i didn't
list them. as for the other ones, i'll take a listen sometime; didn't find
myself too fond of stromkern other than a couple of songs, and i have yet to
hear hanzel und gretyl.
heh, i do have a car; my mother got a new car and the old one has been
dubbed mine. the problem is, i've been far too lazy to go to the dmv and get
a permit/license, or i could've been driving a while ago. oh well.
thanks again for suggestions and comments and all that wee type of stuff.

Actually, I was hoping to use Stromkern as a way to trick you into being
curious about Monstrum Sepsis, and then maybe to other non-EBM things.
;) Not that EBM is bad, but based on your list, it looked like you
already know how to find it. Keep listening to it, I certainly do.

The Suicide Commando I recommended isn't that old, but has the virtue of
being played less often at many clubs. It is of no surprise that some
people (like me), quickly find themselves disliking overplayed stuff
(like SC's 'mindstrip' material).

Samples of HuG's latest album are on their website:

http://www.hanzelundgretyl.com/

The site requires flash player. Honestly I didn't care for what I heard
there at first, but did hear one track on one of KDVS's industrial shows
and liked it enough to give them a second chance. Now I love the album.

you warrant a car when it's no less than 10 miles each way to go
anywhere useful, and public transportation is a joke :^P

I'd say so. Although even if the content was much higher, and whoever
didn't want to read playlists was still irritated by them, they could
always put a filter on all posts with the word "playlist" (or
whatever) in the topic line.

No excuse for complaining really....

Many playlists don't include the term in the subject line. And
many DJs seem to have a habit of regularly altering their
identity on Usenet, making individual killfiles useless.

Yup, Jimmy Joe Snark, AKA Jean-Marc Lederman, did mixing/production work with
Front 242, particularly on "Fuck Off Evil" and "Angels Vs Animals".

All I can say is that you have a very strange definition of "old school"

Well, the term "old school2 is more a stylistic classification
rather than a matter of years. And in an industrial discussion
forum I's associate "old school" with stuff along the lines of
Throbbing Gristle, early Cabaret Voltaire, NON, early Laibach,
Neubauten, Nurse With Wound and so on.

EBM and synthpop bands like Front 242, Nitzer Ebb or The
Weathermen are clearly different.
